The TechSchool

Welcome to the ROMAD.COM public affairs section.  This area is designed to give you a brief overview of what a ROMAD is and what we do.

1C4X1  Tactical Air Command and Control Specialist.  1C4X1 is an AFSC (MOS for you army folks) for enlisted personnel filling the role of a TACP.  These personnel have a 3 tiered career path.  First, they attend a 72 day Techschool at Hurlburt Field Florida where they learn the basics of their job.  Items such as Ground Navigation, symbology, basic radio and a long list of other items.  Everyday at the school starts with some outstanding Physical Training.  Since we are stationed predominantly on Army Forts, we comply with the Army Physical testing standards (see www.army.mil for details on their programs).   The next step is called 5 level and this is where we get used the most.  The 1C4 will, by now, will have attained their ETAC (Enlisted Terminal Attack Control) status.  Which means that they can now control air strikes on their own without someone over their shoulder.  This makes this individual a MASSIVE force multiplier.  With a portable radio-transceiver, an ETAC can call forth massive firepower to any point on the battlefield in support of the Army Ground commanders scheme of battle.  At the 7 and 9 levels (combined for ease of understanding) a 1C4 is a manager of teams of other 1C4s.  Placed in positions such as Flight NCOIC or Squadron superintendent they could command as many as 75 personnel.  For further information about where you might find 1C4s click the Career Path Link to the left.  You will find 1C4s on ABCCC, JSTARS and every combat maneuver unit the Army has to include the Special Forces and the Rangers.  We live on Army forts almost all of our careers.  Open your local Post phone book and look for XXX ASOS or XXX ASOC.  Those units will contain your 1C4s.

TACP:  Tactical Air Control Party. (pronounced TACK-P)  The most forward element of the US Air Force ground Tactical Air Control System.  The term can be used to identify one 1C4, one ALO or an entire squadron of them.  Thus, if you entered a TOC (Tactical Operations Center) and yelled, "Hey TACP!"  you might have several individuals look up at you.  (Probably the Cmd Sgt Major among them wondering why you are shouting in his TOC)

ALO Air Liaison Officer.  An officer that is attached to a TACP for a two year tour (unless they go to Korea, where its only one year).  These individuals are rated officers (Pilots, navs, bomb navs etc) that act as Liaisons between the Army Ground Commander and the entire USAF.  They will be answering questions from the Army concerning anything Air Force, from how many bombs to destroy a particular target to how many wheels a C-5 has.  Upon completion of their tour they return to the "blue" Air Force or retire.  We, unlike every other career field in the Air Force, do not have dedicated officers.

ROMAD Radio Operator Maintenance and Driver.  A Vietnam era term to identify an enlisted member of a TACP.  Before the 1C4X1 AFSC existed, personnel from the 304X1 (radio maint) were "chosen" to go with the MRC (M-151 jeep loaded down with radio equipment) and make sure it worked for the Battalion Air Liaison Officer (an Air FAC on loan to the ground maneuver unit) when he needed it.  Act as a radio operator for the Tactical Air Request Net (an HF radio net) and act as a driver for the vehicle.   This acronym has unofficially changed to Recon Observe Mark And Destroy as we no longer repair any of the radios.  Our role of just being a Radio Operator is long dead as we are now some of the most highly skilled weapons systems roving the battlefield.

ETACEnlisted Terminal Attack Controller. (Pronounced E-TACK) After spending about 2-3 years in the job, a candidate goes to the Joint Firepower Control course (http://wwwmil.nellis.af.mil/agos/jfcc/index.html) for upgrade training on the nuances of Air Strike control.  The candidate is returned to their unit and is given top off training, given an evaluation and signed off.  This check ride is re-accomplished annually.  This individual is authorized to control air strikes without supervision.  Of all the air strike controllers, only the US Air Force uses enlisted personnel for this mission.  The US Marines and the rest of the WORLD use rated flying officers.  So the next time you are on a training exercise or a live battlefield and you see aircraft striking a target, you can be sure that there is an ETAC somewhere nearby meeting the ground commanders intent.

Cross Training

What's it take to cross train into the 1C4X1?
(quoted from our TACP rep at Lackland)

OK Guys...here's the real deal. You CANNOT come into the AF to be a guaranteed ROMAD. We used to do that and had about a 60-70% washout rate in Tech School and our career field manning sucked. I will agree that the best and easiest way to get in is to enter the AF in any open category...General, Mechanical, Electronics, or Admin. This way there is nothing stopping you from trying out once you get here. The are also a large number of guaranteed jobs you can get and still try out. On the other side of that, there are a lot of jobs that if you come in with, you will not be able to try out. We also do not recruit every week to fill our classes. Pass to all your future wannabe ROMAD studs to call the TACP office at Lackland at DSN 473-3882 or (210) 671-3882 to get the best, most up-to-date poop. This isn't rocket science but most recruiters don't know what it takes to get into TACP nor do they care because they are too busy trying to make goal. We put the info out to them but it takes the extra effort they don't have time to give.

Special Forces / Ranger  Yes, we have personnel with all the Ranger battalions and all the Active Special Forces Groups.  These individuals are hand selected and tested to fill these positions.  They are among the top 2% of the career field in their knowledge and intestinal fortitude.  Only personnel that have been in the job for at least 3 years can even apply for a SOF (Special Operations Forces) position.   Below is an example message that was sent out to all the Air Support Operations Groups world wide:
